Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) Laboratory at 2.LF UK

About us

The Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) Laboratory at the Department of Physiology, 2nd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, is dedicated to the measurement of free radicals using electron spin resonance (ESR).

The laboratory is equipped with an e-scan instrument from Bruker. This benchtop ESR spectrometer is fully sufficient for the measurement of oxygen radicals and nitric oxide in biological systems such as cell suspensions, isolated blood vessels and blood.

The main advantage of measuring free radicals by ESR is the detection of only unpaired electrons in these adducts and thus zero signal from substances that have all electrons paired. Another advantage of the system is the determination of the signal, which varies according to the chemical composition of the substance and therefore allows the radical production to be determined and calibrated in absolute units over a given time period.

What we offer

  • Measurement of superoxide in blood and small tissues
  • Measurement of nitric oxide (NO)
  • Measurement of the antioxidant capacity of substances
  • Monitoring of oxygen radical production during treatment
